The Dala Horse is a traditional Scandinavian symbol. The story dates back hundreds of years to an area in the Swedish heartland. In the Dalarna region near Mora, the legends and historical significance of our little wooden friend exists. Originally hand-carved from scraps of wood as toys for children, the Dala Horse embodies a part of Sweden's National heritage. The native wood from which the authentic figures are carved come from the slow-growing pine forests around Lake Siljan. The subject for this illustration is a hand-carved Dala horse from the Nils Olsson factory in Nusnas, Sweden.
